Skator Gator - 2020 (PC, Mobile)

Fast & Infuriating

Skator Gator was originally developed at Weathered Sweater in 2020 for PC and Mobile. Fast paced platforming-style games were a massive inspiration, the Sonic franchise being one of the main reference points. True to its roots, gameplay is very fast and because of this it had generally been considered "too hard" for a lot of it's development by both testers and devs alike.

I joined the team mid-way through production to help find the right flow for levels. My goal was to design more introductory courses to ease the early difficulty spike and tutorialize the enemies and pickups without breaking the pacing. I ended up having a hand in almost half of the levels published in the original itch.io release of the game, many of them focused on tutorializing the player and forcing them to adapt to new enemy and movement challenges. I designed many of the original levels for world 1 and 2, and when the project was revitalized for a Steam release the following year those levels were retouched by other contractors to account for new level elements (and they did a great job!)

New Dimension, New Possiblities

The sequel to Skator Gator! Much like how Sonic Adventure aimed to recontextualize Sonic's movements into a 3D world, so too does SG3D. It is essentially the advanced version of original Skator Gator with the added ability to have walking platformer sections and a greater combat variety. At time of writing it is currently in development and slated for a 2023 release!

I was brought on to the project to help flesh out the level content in general. Much of my work centered on maintaining an intended skill focus and pacing set out by the design team beforehand. It was fun finding new ways to explore 3D movement that complimented the legacy mechanics! Quickly it became clear that there were a lot of opportunities to build unique and engaging levels that felt like a truly leveled up Skator Gator while also maintaining the unique lane hopping gameplay of the original. I created concepts for a little under half of the levels in the game across all three worlds, which I took through greyboxing and playtesting as well as provided feedback on all other designs.

Verticality

Greenjamin can jump now, so it's only fitting we gave him lots of places to jump to!

Variety

Walking sections allow for more complex paths when combined with pipe sections.

Replayability

Critical paths, challenge paths, hidden pickups & secrets... there's a lot to do!

Testimonials (for Skator Gator)...

"...This game doesn't hold back with the difficulty, introducing a lot of fun game play nearly every level - it becomes satisfying to make it through to the end of each level, and to challenge yourself to do it better each time."

-Brian, Steam Review (Skator Gator)

"THIS GATOR GOT THE ZOOMIES!!! He's a fast gator with a mission and I support him with my whole heart. Great level design to teach you the mechanics then put them to the test. Love the soundtrack too!"
